School Notes:

  • The Marvelwood Summer Program has provided instruction in reading, English, and study skills since 1964. The Marvelwood name has become synonymous with caring and effective developmental education. For the many students who have been genuinely motivated to improve their academic work, The Marvelwood Summer has been an scholastic turning point.
  • The ungraded curriculum, which emphasizes skill building and confidence building, enables young people to manage their schoolwork more effectively; to apply their newly developed skills to reading writing, and mathematics; and to think of themselves as capable and successful learners.
  • All students take six classes, which average eight members. Courses include: Study Skills, Word Attack and Spelling, Composition & Vocabulary. These courses also offer skill-building work in basic math, pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, word processing, critical reading, studio art, filmmaking, drama, journalism, SAT/SSAT review, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Marvelwood also offers remedial credit in English 9, English 10, and Algebra 1 through special arrangement with the student's school.
  • Students can choose from a wide variety of sports and activities including swimming, softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, touch football, lacrosse, tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, mountain biking, horseback riding, golf, nature hikes along the Appalachian Trail, arts and crafts, filmmaking and photography.
