School Notes:

  • A challenging and rewarding Ivy League university experience awaits students at the Harvard Summer School. As part of America's oldest and most prestigious university, the Harvard Summer School offers open admission in several hundred day and evening liberal arts courses, in addition to English language programs for non-native speakers (see Institute for English Language Programs), a selective college-level program for secondary school students (see Secondary School Program), opportunities for study abroad, and many events and extracurricular activities. Students will have access to a distinguished faculty, well-equipped labs, exceptional museums, and the largest university library system in the world. Harvard Summer School students of many ages from all areas of the United States and more than 90 countries live and learn together as they satisfy their intellectual curiosities, earn college credit, and explore Harvard University.
  • Each year Harvard Summer School accepts a large number of high school students who have completed their senior, junior, or sophomore year. Secondary School Program (SSP) students living on campus enroll in two 4-unit courses or one 8-unit course and receive college-level credit, which may be transferable toward a future undergraduate degree at most colleges and universities, including Harvard College. Commuting students and students enrolled as distance education students may take only one 4-unit course. Students in residence live together in Harvard Yard, with Harvard undergraduates as proctors.
  • Featured academic experiences for SSP students include the Math Program, Drama Program, and Writing Program, as well as Summer Seminars. Also of interest to SSP students is the College Preparatory Program, which includes talks about college selection and admissions, trips to several New England colleges, workshops on test-taking and preparing the college application, and a large college fair.
  • Another vital element of the SSP experience is the rich variety of extracurricular activities, including intramural sports, such as sailing, tennis, and swimming; and a trivia bowl, a talent show, and SSP dances. Whether living on campus or commuting, SSP students are encouraged to take advantage of the many academic, cultural, college preparatory, athletic, and social resources of Harvard Summer School.
