School Notes:

  • Portsmouth Abbey School is a coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12. Founded in 1926 by the English Benedictine community, the school is located on a 500-acre campus along the picturesque shores of Rhode Islands Narragansett Bay.
  • The Portsmouth Abbey education is grounded in the Western intellectual tradition, from ancient Greece and Rome and continuing into this century. This classical curriculum is balanced by a focus on spirituality, athletics, the arts and fun.
  • Summer is a time for new and enjoyable experiences. It is also a time to get ahead in school. A summer at Portsmouth Abbey accomplishes both goals. The Portsmouth Abbey Summer School provides each student with a talented and dedicated faculty, excellent facilities, and a sound program of studies that is faithful to the moral and intellectual ideals Benedictine communities have been passing on to youths for fifteen hundred years.
  • The academic program of the Summer School provides a focus on basic subjects as well as offering enrichment courses. Students come here for an introduction to our friendly and structured style of life, to strengthen their academic position while also taking other courses for enrichment, and to enjoy close contacts between students and faculty in small classes. Students attend four class periods per day, Monday through Saturday. They also have a supervised study hall in the Houses each evening. Most courses require 30 to 45 minutes of homework per class meeting. Internet access is available for the students in the Computer Center and in the House libraries.
