School Notes:

  • The mission of Putney's Excel programs is to provide challenging, active, fun summer enrichment programs that give students insight into college life while fostering a balance of personal and intellectual growth. Students are invited to broaden their minds, sharpen their athletic talents, refine their artistic abilities, and contribute to a community, while making life-long friends.
  • Our programs are informal and supportive, an ideal environment for seeking new challenges and developing new skills. In seminars and extracurricular activities, student involvement is critical -- active participation and creativity lead to a summer experience that will meet and even surpass students' highest hopes for learning, exploration, and adventure.
  • Courses of study at Amherst and Williams are divided into five categories: Arts, Humanities, Languages and Rhetoric, Sciences (Social and Natural), and Specialized Courses. A typical day for an Excel student at Amherst or Williams College is much like that of any college undergraduate, but within a structure appropriate to their age. Students enjoy all the benefits of stimulating, seminar-style courses and get to spend time with like-minded individuals who quickly become valued friends. In addition, they get involved in a host of fun and exhilarating activities, from pick-up games to college visits to unique course-generated projects.
  • Outside of class, faculty and students work together to organize events that are fun and rewarding for athletes, artists, musicians, video buffs, dancers, and frisbee players alike. These events and activities form an integral part of Excel, promoting adventure, challenge, self-discovery, and lasting growth.
