School Notes:
- The Taft Summer School offers an enrichment program that provides a rewarding experience to an impressively diverse group of young people. Students from all over the world seek out our program for a variety of reasons.
- Some come to create a firm foundation for the courses they will take the next fall, while others come to improve their reading and study skills. Others come in order to gain exposure to courses of study not available at their present schools; still others come for the experience of living independently in a diverse and engaging residential community. Whatever their reasons for coming, these students share a desire to spend five weeks improving their academic skills, strengthening their backgrounds, and having fun.
- If you choose to attend Taft, you will encounter a superb group of energetic, experienced teachers. They recognize that the Summer School presents a unique opportunity for enriching young people who have chosen to take advantage of traditional vacation time. Students entering tenth, eleventh, or twelfth grade enroll in our Liberal Studies Program; those entering seventh, eighth, or ninth grade take our Young Scholars Program.
- The Young Scholars Program is designed for students who are entering grades 7, 8 and 9. Aimed at younger men and women who intend to take on the challenges of rigorous public and private secondary schools, this program focuses on building essential skills and on instilling students with greater confidence as they look ahead to seventh, eight and ninth grade, and, further down the road, to the demands of a college preparatory program. In the Liberal Studies Program, students are encouraged to take a variety of courses in different disciplines. Taft has long held that a liberal arts education is the cornerstone to a productive life of service and happiness. The Liberal Studies program offers major courses (100-level) and electives (200-level) to students who are entering grades 10, 11 and 12.
- In addition, the Summer School makes full use of Taft's numerous playing fields, tennis courts and the McCullough and Cruikshank athletic facilities. From traditional sports like tennis, basketball, and soccer to volleyball, weight training, squash and ultimate frisbee, Taft offers a full menu of athletic choices. Modern studios, labs, and theaters offer ample opportunity for artistic expression for the novice or the accomplished artist.
